As a Private First Class, I belonged to the 224th Engineer Battalion of the lowa Army National Guard, and my service ended with an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons in August 1983, owing to recurrent knee problems that also shortened my football career at ISU.

Education/Experience
After graduating from lowa State, I built a long-term career in public school education, where I worked as a classroom teacher, athletic coach, curriculum director and principal. I spent the final 25 years of my career as an elementary school principal, working in several school districts, including Muscatine and Spencer in Iowa, and Brandon Valley, located just outside Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While teaching in the Ottumwa [Iowa] School District, I obtained a master's degree from Truman State.
Social/Volunteer Organizations
I participated in the Iowa Shrine Bowl for the benefit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children following my graduation from Fairfield High School. At Iowa State, I was a college radio DJ, student-faculty advisory council representative and member of the Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames.
More Information
I signed with Iowa State under head coach Earle Bruce and was a linebacker from 1978-1980. My collegiate football career was cut short by a major knee injury [ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears] sustained during the 1979 Cardinal and Gold spring game. Despite attempts to return, the injury proved too severe, ending my playing career as a redshirt sophomore in 1980. After my football career ended, head coach Donnie Duncan honored my scholarship, allowing me to finish my degree and pursue a career in education. I owe a great deal to the coaching staff and athletic administration, whose support after my career-ending injury directly influenced my approach to school leadership. I aimed to lead with the same integrity, sincerity and dignity shown to me during my time as a student-athlete at Iowa State.
