Professional Information
Retired
As a Private First Class, I belonged to the 224th Engineer Battalion of the lowa Army National Guard, and my service ended with an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons in August 1983, owing to recurrent knee problems that also shortened my football career at ISU.
Additional Information
Education/Experience
Upon graduating from lowa State, I embarked on a long-term career in public school education, where I worked as a classroom teacher, athletic coach, and school administrator. For the last 25 years of my career, I held the position of elementary school principal. I worked in several school districts in lowa, including Muscatine and Spencer. While teaching in the Ottumwa School District, I obtained a master's degree from Truman State. I was also a school administrator for the Brandon Valley School District, located just outside Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Social/Volunteer Organizations
I participated in the Iowa Shrine Bowl for the benefit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children following my graduation from Fairfield High School. At Iowa State, I was a college radio DJ, student-faculty advisory council member, and Campus Crusade for Christ participant.
More Information
Following my prep football career at Fairfield, I signed with lowa State, where I played linebacker. A major knee injury in the 1979 Cardinal and Gold spring football game [ACL, MCL and meniscus tears] caused recurrent knee problems that brought an untimely end to my career as a redshirt sophomore. Despite this setback, I remained on scholarship, completed my degree, and pursued a career in education, thanks to the support of the Iowa State University football coaching and athletic department staff. The dignity and support shown to me by the lowa State football program after my career-ending injury revealed the profound impact a strong staff and administration can have on an individual's life, prompting me to pursue providing similar support within a school setting.
