As a Private First Class, I belonged to the 224th Engineer Battalion of the lowa Army National Guard, and my service ended with an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons in August 1983, owing to recurrent knee problems that also shortened my football career at ISU.

Education/Experience
After Iowa State, I had a long career as a public school educator, working for decades as a teacher, coach, and school administrator. While teaching in Ottumwa, Iowa, I earned my master’s degree at Northeast Missouri State [now Truman State]. I spent my last 25 years in public education as an elementary school principal, including Brandon Valley near Sioux Falls—where I was also the district curriculum director—as well as schools in Spencer and Muscatine, Iowa.
Social/Volunteer Organizations
I participated in the 1978 Iowa Shrine Bowl for the benefit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children following my graduation from Fairfield High School. At Iowa State, I was a college radio DJ, student-faculty advisory council representative and member of the Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames.
More Information
My Iowa State football career as a linebacker under Coaches Earle Bruce [1978] and Donnie Duncan [1979–1980] was cut short during my redshirt sophomore year by a severe, recurring knee injury. Even though my playing days ended early, Coach Duncan was a class man who imbued the Iowa State football program with decency. He extended a helping hand by honoring my scholarship—a demonstration of integrity that changed the course of my life. Because of his support, I was able to graduate and build a career in public education. That was a fine thing Coach Duncan did for me, and I carried that lesson on leadership into my decades-long service as a teacher, coach, and school administrator, guided by the character modeled for me as a Cyclone.
